From L-R: China Crosstalk host Jay Stone and
DragonVenture chairman Bobby
Chao. |
In tonight's program, the topic was about the current state of the
venture capital industry in the downed stock market and
DragonVenture strategy in this environment. Stone began the
interview by introducing Bobby's colorful and intriguing experiences
including his involvement in two major IPOs. Subsequently, Stone
asked Bobby how the VC as an industry was fairing. Bobby cited some
numbers from BusinessWeek reporting that several large and
well-known VCs have suffered -91 percent -85 percent of return. As a
result, in this market, an IRR of 30 percent or more is considered
exceptional. Bobby explained that DragonVenture was able to steer
away from this downed market with its strategy to (1) focus on
infrastructure, (2) to emphasize correct business models, and (3)
move into markets with exceptional growth - such as China's nascent
hghi-tech industry. In addition, Bobby explained that by providing
"soft" incubation services in addition to "funding? DragonVenture is
able to advise and guide companies "hand-in-hand" to focus, thereby
helping them avoid pitfalls and steer toward success.
Channel 26, based in the Silicon Valley, draws viewership of many
entrepreneurs, engineers, and aspiring business people. As a result,
a flood of call-in's were made to China Crosstalk. Bobby answered
each of the caller's questions with ease. Many people were curious
what DragonVenture's role was with China and U.S. entrepreneurs.
Bobby replied that DragonVenture would serve as the "bridge"
enabling entrepreneurs and investors on both sides to collaborate,
diversify investments and mitigate risk. In addition, DragonVenture
leverages the core competencies of companies on each side for the
eventual success of startups and maximized return for investors.
After the program went off the air, Bobby remained in the studio for
30 minutes to answer questions from callers still waiting to ask him
questions in the queue.
Bobby is available to help promising startup achieve their goals and
help potential investors open up new areas of investment that will
increase their return. For those interested in contacting Bobby for
