DragonVenture Chairman Bobby Chao Interviewed on Popular Mandarin Television Talk Show China CrossTalk


San Francisco, April 25, 2001 - Bobby Chao, Chairman of DragonVenture, Inc. was interviewed live today by popular Mandarin television talk show host Jay Stone on the Bay Area’s Channel 26 show, China Crosstalk. A popular program enjoyed by Bay Area Chinese-Americans, China CrossTalk provides a live, call-in forum for Bay Area residents to voice their opinions about current issues and ask questions of interviewees, usually an expert in his or her respective field.

In tonight's program, the topic was about the current state of the venture capital industry in the downed stock market and DragonVenture strategy in this environment. Stone began the interview by introducing Bobby's colorful and intriguing experiences including his involvement in two major IPOs. Subsequently, Stone asked Bobby how the VC as an industry was fairing. Bobby cited some numbers from BusinessWeek reporting that several large and well-known VCs have suffered -91 percent -85 percent of return. As a result, in this market, an IRR of 30 percent or more is considered exceptional. Bobby explained that DragonVenture was able to steer away from this downed market with its strategy to (1) focus on infrastructure, (2) to emphasize correct business models, and (3) move into markets with exceptional growth - such as China's nascent hghi-tech industry. In addition, Bobby explained that by providing "soft" incubation services in addition to "funding? DragonVenture is able to advise and guide companies "hand-in-hand" to focus, thereby helping them avoid pitfalls and steer toward success.

Channel 26, based in the Silicon Valley, draws viewership of many entrepreneurs, engineers, and aspiring business people. As a result, a flood of call-in's were made to China Crosstalk. Bobby answered each of the caller's questions with ease. Many people were curious what DragonVenture's role was with China and U.S. entrepreneurs. Bobby replied that DragonVenture would serve as the "bridge" enabling entrepreneurs and investors on both sides to collaborate, diversify investments and mitigate risk.
