K. Bobby Chao
Co-Founder, Chairman of the Board

Bobby began his career as one of the five original founders of Cadence Design Systems. A year after Cadence’s successful IPO, Bobby founded Ocron, a leader in Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology and document management software. Bobby was chairman and CEO of Ocron until Umax Technologies, Inc. acquired it. He then became part of the Umax team serving as Senior Vice President of Marketing in charge of corporate marketing and investment. Bobby was previously General Partner for Technology Associates Management Company and has served as Chairman and CEO of VA Linux Systems. He is currently the board directors of Zengen, Inc. a bioscience company in southern California, and Penguin Computing, a clustering Linux server manufacturer in San Francisco. He is also on the board of several other companies and professional organizations. Bobby holds an MS in Physics from Georgia State University and an MS in Aeronautics Engineering from Stanford University.

Tony C. Luh

Tony has over 15 years of international capital market experience as well as an extensive business background, particularly in the areas of media sales, strategic alliances and new business development. Having worked in various executive-level positions for several Chinese-American companies, Tony possesses exceptional negotiation, people, and management skills. Over the last few years, Tony has been active in the Internet space managing partnerships and striking deals with such companies as E-Loan, Yahoo!, Excite@Home, CNET, eBay, DoubleClick, Priceline.com, Fidelity Investments. Tony attended the University of Texas at Austin with a major in computer science and holds a bachelor’s degree in Television Broadcasting and Advertising from Washington State University.

Dr. Tian Jie
General Partner, China

Dr. Jie Tian, a long time member at the prestigious Chinese Academy of Sciences, is an early embracer of the Internet age. He is the founder of and has been the chairman of DigiArk Information Corporation since 1999. DigiArk is a renowned Internet software company in Beijing. In 2000, Dr. Tian was invited to present “Considering the development of Internet in China” at the Harvard China Review. Dr. Tian received his Ph.D degree (with honors) in artificial intelligence from the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in 1992. Between 1994 and 1996, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1996, Dr. Tian became a pioneer in the Internet space in China by founding ReadChina.com and acted as its CEO until 1999. Among other titles he holds, Dr. Tian is currently a reviewer for the American Mathematical Society; Director of Special Social Committee of Pattern Recognition and Machine Intelligence of the Chinese Society of Automation; Deputy Director of the China Automation Recognition Society; and a senior member of the International Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

   

Dr. Brian Tien
Venture Partner

Brian is a veteran executive with 25+ years of hi-tech business management experience ranging from multi-national enterprises to VC-funded startups, with strong global perspectives on US, Asia and Israel. His work expertise covers wide range of hi-tech areas, especially in IC/EDA, networking and software outsourcing.

He is the Board Director and former CEO of Acornsoft, a Shanghai-based startup he co-founded with several other Silicon Valley entrepreneurs in 2001. Acornsoft’s China-based R&D center provides software development and testing services to US high-tech companies. Brian served on advisory boards of several IT startup companies in Silicon Valley, as well as business consultant for international technology companies in Taiwan and Singapore. Brian has extensive experience in founding hi-tech startup companies in Silicon Valley since 1996, including Lean Software (San Jose) and Everex Communications (Fremont). He served CEO and Marketing VP roles in those companies. Before his entrepreneur career, he worked at multi-nationals like Intel, Cadence, GM Hughes, for over 20 years holding senior management positions in R&D, business development and application engineering. He holds BSEE from National Taiwan University and MS/Ph.D. in Computer Sciences from University of Wisconsin, Madison. He published numerous papers on IEEE and ACM publications

Gang (Mark) Mai
Venture Partner

Mark is of the first generation of China venture capital investment business. He accumulated abundant deal experience and business network in private investment and public capital market during his career in Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Silicon Valley as both an entrepreneur and venture capitalist.

He started his career in venture capital in 1996 as the preparatory team member of Shenzhen Venture Capital Co. In addition, Mark was also the founding member of Beijing Genius Capital (Direct Investment Division), and Co-founder of Shanghai Pudong Venture Capital. After that, He has served as the general manager of investment and business development for Shenzhen International Holdings (Hong Kong) Company, an investment holding group listed in Hong Kong and parent company of other 3 public companies listed in Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, including the Shenzhen Hi-tech Investment Holdings (Hong Kong) Company. Mark has participated in founding two startups and conducted many direct investment transactions in China and US. Currently, Mark is a venture partner of DragonVenture, founder and CEO of eFriendsNet Entertainment Corp., a company providing social networking service through cell phone and Internet in China.

Mark holds a BA degree in Economics from Renmin University of China and an MBA of UCLA Anderson Business School with focus on entrepreneurship and strategy. He was the first prize winner of “UCLA Knapp Venture Competition”, and the fifth prize winner in “Carrot Challenge”, the largest business plan competition in US, sponsored by Forbes.


   

Yulei Zhang
Cross-Pacific Consulting Manager

Yulei is instrumental in advising US entities on cultural and business differences between the US and Greater China markets. While in her MBA candidacy, Yulei had consulted multi-national enterprises including GM, Motorola and Philips on overcoming cultural differences that are hindering the development of their foreign operations in China. She had also since advised the local business communities, including Le Centre International de Lafayette, on Chinese business practices and cultural implications. While in China, Yulei interfaced with several multination firms while serving as an interpreter and liaison for businesses such as Marriott China Hotel, Unic International Hotel, and trade shows such as Chinese Export Commodity Fair in Guangzhou. She had also served as an instructor at Guangzhou English Medium Educational Center coaching students and professionals on improving foreign language proficiency. Yulei earned her MBA degree from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and a joint bachelor degree in English and International Business from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (the former Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Language). Yulei’s experiences in the major cities in China endowed her with strong multi-language skills. In addition to English, she can speak fluently in Mandarin, Cantonese and shanghai Dialect, the three most popular languages in China.
