Silicon Valley based cross-Pacific venture capital and consulting firm DragonVenture led, in early November, a US die casting delegation for a week-long visit to the city of Dongguan, the third largest exporting city and one of the largest manufacturing bases in China.

US companies on the delegation are members of the North American Die Casting Association (NADCA), the sole trade and technical association of the die casting industry with membership consisting of both corporate and individual members from over 950 companies located in every geographic region of the US. At DragonVenture’s advice, NADCA decided to make the trade mission to China to explore manufacturing, outsourcing, partnership, or joint venture opportunities in China and chose Dongguan as the sole destination of their China trip, attracted by its burgeoning die casting industry.

The NADCA delegation of 22 members representing 14 companies, as well as the president of NADCA, visited 11 die-casting plants in 8 different townships in Dongguan within 5 days. The delegates were highly impressed with the fast-growing die casting industry in Dongguan. They were most pleasantly surprised by the upscale machinery and modernized operations in the plants they toured. The delegates also had the chance to tour around each town they visited and met with the township government officials. They were fascinated by the vertically integrated industrial environment in Dongguan, in addition to its astounding city development.

The week-long trip has no doubt opened up the window to China’s huge opportunities for the delegates. Many of them have expressed strong and particular interests in going back to Dongguan in the near future to explore the huge potentials there. Their impressions and visions of China, and Dongguan in particular, are best summarized by Mr. Daniel Twarog, the President of NADCA. “We are truly impressed with the competitiveness of the die casting industry in Dongguan. The delegation trip is indeed a valuable eye-opening experience for all of us. Our belief and sense of urgency are further confirmed that we need to consider business alliances and strategies that will allow us to continue to grow in the highly competitive global economy.”
